Avoid MSG, Fish Known To Potentially Have High Mercury Levels

Due to high mercury levels, some types of fish are best avoided or eaten rarely when trying to get pregnant. These include swordfish, shark, grouper, marlin, orange roughy, tilefish, mackerel, tuna, bluefish, lobster, halibut, croaker and bass saltwater.

The fish with the reported lowest amounts of mercury include calamari, crab, pollock, scallops, salmon, shrimp, clams, and others, but these also need to be eaten in moderation.

Avoid foods that could have monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG. Foods that might contain MSG include potato chips, Chinese food, meat seasonings and packaged soups. MSG can appear on labels as autolyzed yeast, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed pea protein.

Other foods to avoid:

• Avoid raw or undercooked meats.
